As was previously announced, OnePlus partnered with the iconic camera company, Hasselblad. This isn't just a partnership for the OnePlus 9 series, but an ongoing partnership. Which should greatly improve the camera performance on OnePlus phones in the future.

But starting with the OnePlus 9 series, this new Hasselblad Camera for Mobile will bring Hasselblad's iconic color performance to a smartphone for the first time ever. The OnePlus 9 series uses the new OnePlus standard for color calibration, Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad. Which will bring more perceptually accurate and natural-looking colors to your photos on these new phones.

OnePlus worked with Sony on a custom-designed sensor

Ahead of the OnePlus 9 series launch today, we also heard from OnePlus that it had worked with Sony on a new custom-designed sensor. It's a 48-megapixel IMX789 sensor, which has a 1/1.4" sensor. That's fairly large for a smartphone. And that results in an incredible looking set of pictures. As it is able to get more data, thanks to the larger lens.

This new lens also uses new technologies like 2×2 on-chip lens, 12-bit RAW and dual native ISO and DOL-HDR. This also offers faster focus speeds, and four times more information for greater color accuracy. This means that you are going to be less likely to miss the shot of your dog or kid doing something funny.

The ultra-wide lens on the OnePlus 9 Pro is a 50-megapixel sensor from Sony. The Sony IMX766, which is a 1/1.56" sensor. And this will ensure enhanced image quality and lower noise. The OnePlus 9 Pro does also offer a 3.3x zoom lens with OIS, and it can max out at 30x digital zoom. And finally, there's a dedicated monochrome camera that will work with the main camera to add detail and layering to black and white photos.

This is only the beginning of Hasselblad in OnePlus smartphones

Many people are likely skeptical about what to expect from Hasselblad working with OnePlus on its cameras. And well they should be. We've seen camera companies work with smartphone companies before, mostly for licensing to sell more units. But OnePlus promises us that Hasselblad is working on its mobile cameras and it's not just a licensing thing.

Which leads us to believe that it will be similar to Huawei and Leica. If you remember the first Huawei phone with Leica lenses, it wasn't much to write home about. But after a couple of years, the cameras became really impressive. We'd expect something similar for OnePlus and Hasselblad. That the cameras will be much improved for the OnePlus 10 and 11. We could even see improvements on the OnePlus 9T later this year.

Of course, we won't know for sure until we actually get our hands on the phone and check it out.
