Back in April 2020, Google added a Tiled layout to its video conferencing app Google Meet as the lockdown measures against the COVID-19 pandemic popularized the "work from home" concept. This allowed users to see up to 16 other participants in a meeting. This Google Meet tile view is now coming to mobile.

Google on Wednesday announced that the new layout option is now rolling out for Meet on iOS. The company says the Android app will also pick up the new feature "soon," though it doesn't provide an exact timeframe. And while Google has yet to specify, the Tiled layout should be available through both the dedicated app as well as the integrated experience inside Gmail.

The tile view for Google Meet on mobile lets you see up to eight participants at once. Additional people, if any, are noted in the bottom-right corner. Each box or tile features the name of the person. If someone is talking then a blue boundary will highlight them and a talk status will appear on the top-right corner of that particular box.

Google Meet gets tile view on mobile apps

2020 changed the way we learn, work, or entertain. With the still-ongoing global health crisis putting pretty much every outdoor activity on a standstill, everything started to happen on screen. That's when video conferencing apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet grew in popularity. All of these platforms have since been adding new features to make the experience smooth and pleasing for their users and Google Meet is no exception.

Over the past year or so, Google's video conferencing app has gained a lot of new features. As you'd expect, the desktop or web version of the app was always given priority over mobile apps. However, Google Meet on mobile is now picking up those new additions one after the other as well.

Google recently announced an update for the Google Workspace suite, introducing support for background replacement and the ability to participate in Q&A and polls on Meet mobile apps. Moreover, Meet in Gmail is also picking up split-screen and picture-in-picture support. This allows you to seamlessly browse your Gmail while keeping your eyes and ears on the meeting.

Now, with the rollout of the Tiled layout on mobile apps, Google Meet is all set to make remote working more fun. Hopefully, it will not be too long before the Android app picks up the new feature.
