According to The Verge, Twitter emoji reactions are on the way. Twitter and tweeting, in general, can already be fun or not-so-fun experiences depending on how you feel about the platform. Now though, it seems like the social media platform thinks adding emoji reactions will make things better.
Originally reported by TechCrunch, there are screenshots that show a survey sent given to Twitter users. The survey shows the proposed emoji reactions that will come to Twitter. The new reactions are ones the world has seen before.
The "new" reactions include a laughing face with tears, a thinking face, a crying face, shocked faces, angry faces, and fire emojis. Unfortunately, as pointed out by The Verge it would be nice to have a downvote or dislike option. Maybe those options will be introduced in the future.
According to a Twitter spokesperson, Twitter is “exploring additional ways for people to express themselves in conversations on Twitter”. The spokesperson goes on to say that research into the emoji reactions is still in the early stages and that the new reactions would not replace the current heart button.
The feature seems to be on the horizon according to a few tweets from Twitter's design chief. Although, these new reactions will be new to Twitter they aren’t new to the social media world. Facebook offers up a similar set of emoji reactions.
Even the idea of a downvote or dislike option isn’t new as both Reddit and YouTube have these options. Twitter introducing these emoji reactions could have a couple of overall effects. The first is that users could use these reactions to enhance their experience to be more fun like Twitter is hoping.
However, the more likely scenario is it could make Twitter slightly more toxic. Reddit users who get downvoted there is no harm no foul because users do not have their faces or personal lives attached to their accounts usually.
To clarify, Reddit operates in a more anonymous fashion. Twitter has a user’s face and bio attached to whatever they tweet. If a user tweets something heartfelt that they are passionate about, and they only receive angry reactions it could hurt their feelings.
That may sound like a joke. But, social media is known to affect some users based on the number of likes, dislikes, and even negative comments they receive. Twitter is already toxic enough thanks to a lot of people attacking each other.
The idea of emoji reactions is a good idea from Twitter. However, users with ill intentions can easily tarnish this feature. Will that necessarily happen? Nobody knows until the feature rolls out to the masses.
