Twitter has now acquired the ad-removing service Scroll, which will ultimately be rolled into its upcoming subscription service. That’s based on recent reports, detailing Twitter’s plans for the service.
According to Twitter, Scroll will be mostly left intact. Namely, working as a way to access news from participating outlets without ads. Instead, the ads will be paid for in part from the money paid to the subscription. However, the social media giant won’t necessarily be using every part of Scroll, either.
Nuzzle, a service from Scroll that serves up daily emails including top stories shared by people in users’ Twitter feeds will be “winding down.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean that Nuzzle is going away entirely. But, since Twitter only says that it will bring “core elements” over to its subscription service over time, Nuzzle is one part of Scroll that won’t be there right away. And that service will also be shut down on May 6, reports indicate.
Now, Scroll will do more than just benefit those who hold a subscription to the upcoming paid Twitter service. In fact, according to the source, Scroll readily generates more revenue for participating news outlets than ads do. So, in addition to removing ad content for readers, news outlets will benefit as well. And, in fact, they’ll benefit more from Scroll than from serving up ads to those users.
But that does appear to come at a cost. Specifically, while Scroll will benefit Twitter subscribers in the app and online, it will likely be going away on the wider web.
For the time being, Twitter hasn’t detailed exactly what form Scroll will take in its service. Or which features from Nuzzle will be coming to Twitter. The company says plans are still in the early stages, with more news on the matter slated for later on in the year. Regardless, it will likely join other incoming features, such as the ability to un-send tweets and other premium capabilities.
