Earlier this year Microsoft revealed that it was going to be purchasing ZeniMax Media (an acquisition it just finalized today), which meant that it was purchasing Bethesda, whose games will be landing on Xbox Game Pass tomorrow.

At the time of the initial acquisition announcement, one of the main questions people had was if this meant that future Bethesda games would be exclusive to PC and console. If that were the case, it would essentially lock out PlayStation and Nintendo.

But today, Xbox Head Phil Spencer revealed the main reason for acquiring ZeniMax Media, and thereby Bethesda. It was to strengthen the Xbox Game Pass portfolio. Not to ensure it had a large group of insanely popular franchises that it could make exclusive to Xbox and PC.

Bethesda joining Xbox was all about Game Pass

One thing that needs to be clear, is that this doesn't mean there will never be any Xbox-exclusive Bethesda games.

Spencer did note this has always been about Game Pass. However, it was never mentioned that there wouldn't be any Xbox console or PC exclusive titles. That being said, the main reason for the acquisition is to help deliver some excellent game titles to Xbox Game Pass.

Not all of the titles that are under the Bethesda umbrella will be exclusive to Game Pass either. As some already exist on other platforms and there are no plans to remove them. A few titles in particular here are a good example. DOOM Eternal, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and The Elder Scrolls Online.

All three of these are available on Stadia and will continue be. They're also available on Xbox Game Pass as of tomorrow. During today's Bethesda Joins Xbox roundtable, Spencer says that "this is about delivering great games for you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists."

Other platforms will continue be supported

To help assuage some of the potential fears, Spencer also mentioned that support would continue for other platforms.

Stating "we have games that exist on other platforms, and we're gonna go support those games on the platforms they're on." Spencer added that the company would continue to invest in the communities of players that have been built around those games.

Having said all that, it's very likely that some Bethesda games will eventually be exclusive to Xbox. Specifically where you can access the Game Pass service. That means future Bethesda titles that fall into this category, would be available on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and Android devices, and eventually iOS devices.

But Xbox Game Pass is not available on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles. So chances are there will be games that won't make it to those platforms at some point. Even if far in the future.
