Xiaomi is developing a foldable smartphone with an under-display camera, it seems. This information comes from a well-known tipster, Digital Chat Station. The information has been published on Weibo.

Upcoming foldable smartphone from Xiaomi is said to feature an under-display camera

The company is actually developing two smartphones with an under-display camera, according to this info. Those phones are codenamed the Xiaomi “K8” and “J18s”. The latter one is a foldable smartphone, while there’s no information on the first one, not yet.

The “K8” is likely a flagship-grade device, but not a foldable phone, considering the difference in those numbers. We’re only guessing, though, it’s possible that both of them are foldable, as Xiaomi is expected to announce a couple more foldables by the end of 2021.

In any case, the source notes that the “J18s” will become the second foldable smartphone in the company’s lineup. The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold was first, and it launched quite recently, actually. It is available in China only, for now, but it will likely make a global debut soon.

A 90Hz display will be included, along with three cameras on the back

The tipster claims that the “J18s” will feature a display with a 90Hz refresh rate. He’s probably talking about the inner display. The Mi MIX Fold also supports a 90Hz refresh rate, but only on its outer panel.

He also touched on the cameras of the device. It will feature three cameras on the back. A 108-megapixel main camera will be backed by a 3x liquid lens, and an ultra-wide camera. That’s at least what a translation from Chinese says.

One would expect that Xiaomi uses a liquid lens on an ultra-wide camera, so… this is a bit odd. More information about the device will likely surface in the near future. This phone is expected to launch this year.

Samsung is allegedly planning to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an under-display camera, so it will be interesting to see how they compare, presuming that rumors are accurate.
