Xiaomi has just announced its very first foldable smartphone, the Mi MIX Fold. As its name suggests, this smartphone is a part of the company’s Mi MIX lineup. We haven’t seen a MI MIX phone in a while, so this is nice to see.
Do note that this phone has been announced in China, though, it was not a part of the company's official launch event yesterday. There is a chance it may arrive to global markets, though, a good chance, as Xiaomi also shared some info via its global social media handles.
Having said that, let’s take a look at the device, shall we. This smartphone is inspired by the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It opens up like a book, just like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Many people would agree that is the best way to do a foldable device these days.
The bezels around its main display are not thick at all, but the ones surrounding its secondary display are noticeably thicker than on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. They're not obnoxiously thick, though, and many would say this is not bad at all considering we're looking at a first-gen foldable here.
Xiaomi did share some spec info, but not all of it. The phone is made out of metal and glass, and it has two displays. Its main display is the foldable one, and it’s an 8.01-inch QHD+ panel. Its secondary display measures 6.52 inches, and it's a fullHD+ (2520 x 840) panel. The main display offers a 60Hz refresh rate and a max of 600 nits of brightness, while the secondary one comes with a 90Hz refresh rate and a max of 900 nits of brightness.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold is fueled by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, the best Qualcomm has to offer at the moment. It includes 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 256GB/512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage (non-expandable).
A 5,020mAh battery is included inside the Mi MIX Fold, while the phone supports 67W fast wired charging. Wireless charging doesn't seem to be supported.
In regards to the cameras, there are three of them on the back, which serve as main cameras. The main display doesn't have a display camera hole in it, but the secondary one does. That hole is placed in the top-right corner of that panel.
A 108-megapixel main camera (Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor, 7P lens, 9-in-1 pixel binning, 2.1um pixel size) sits on the back of the phone. The ultra-wide 13-megapixel camera (1.12um pixel size, f/2.4 aperture lens, 123-degree FoV) is also included.
The phone's 8-megapixel telephoto camera is especially interesting. Xiaomi decided to utilize a liquid lens on this camera. That is the first liquid lens in a smartphone, ever. This lens can change shape, and it allows that telephoto camera optical magnification from 3x to 30x (80mm equivalent focal lenght). It has a minimum focus distance of 3cm, which basically makes it a macro camera as well. Xiaomi also included its self-developed Surge C1 ISP for photography.
The device includes four Harman Kardon speakers, by the way. The phone, while extended, measures 173.27 x 133.38 x 7.62mm. When folded, it measures 173.27 x 69.8 x 17.22mm. The Black variant of the phone weighs 317 grams, while the Special Edition ceramic model weighs 332 grams.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage costs CNY9,999 ($1,520). The model with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is priced at CNY10,999 ($1,670) in China.
