An invite used to be required to try out Amazon Luna, Amazon's cloud gaming platform and service that launched in 2020. But, that is no longer the case according to Amazon. Right now the Amazon Luna service is still in early access, but Amazon has done away with the invite prerequisite for a very specific group of people.

Customers who own an Amazon Fire TV. Starting from today, Amazon has made it possible to check out Luna in a free trial period if you own select Fire TV devices. Amazon doesn't mention any Fire TV devices in its main announcement specifically. But it does have them listed on support pages. Compatible devices include the Fire TV Stick Lite, Fire TV Stick 2nd and 3rd gen, Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV 3rd gen, Fire TV Cube, Toshiba Fire TV Edition, and Insignia Fire TV Edition.

Luna free trials will last for a week, and after that you pay $5.99 a month for access. You can also add access to the Ubisoft+ channel for $14.99 a month, which adds in a bunch of Ubisoft titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Amazon Luna still requires an invite without Fire TV

If you don't have a Fire TV device, then you will still need an invite to check out the service. And right now Amazon hasn't shared any details on when it plans to open up access without an invite to non-Fire TV customers.

You also can't set up Amazon Luna on a Fire TV device and then jump to another platform to play. So the only way to actually access the service without an invite is through the Fire TV platform.

There is one thing in regards to the service that you don't need an invite for though.

Anyone can now buy the Amazon Luna controller

While you don't need the controller to play games on most devices, Amazon says it should provide the best experience because of how the controller connects to the Luna service.

You used to need an invite to buy the controller. But that's no longer the case. This is a change that goes alongside the rollout for open Fire TV access. Even if you don't have a Fire TV though, you can still buy the controller if you want to be ready with it the moment an invite comes through.

If you'd rather use an existing controller, you can do that too. It does have to be Bluetooth compatible though. And even if it is it may not work quite as well as the Luna controller itself.
