MWC 2021 in Shanghai is ongoing, and ZTE is the latest company to have shown off something truly interesting. ZTE has revealed an under-display facial recognition system, the first one around.

ZTE showed off its under-display facial recognition system at MWC 2021 in Shanghai

This is actually a 3D structured light system that will support facial scanning. The most interesting part of it is, of course, that it is located under the display. Therefore, there’s no need for notches, display holes, or anything of the sort.

This will be out of your sight, the same as under-display cameras. Speaking of which, ZTE already announced a smartphone with an under-display camera, the ZTE Axon 20 5G. The company also plans to announce a new smartphone with such tech, but an improved under-display camera setup.

I’m digressing, let’s get back to the facial scanning tech. ZTE is actually compensating for light transmission loss through the screen by cranking up the pixel density of the projectors. Those projectors create a 3D map of your face.

ZTE actually increased the pixel density by over ten times, in order to boost accuracy. It also improved the pixel density of the area above the camera, from 200ppi to 400ppi, just to make it look more consistent.

On top of everything, the company decided to boost the display refresh rate to 120Hz. ZTE actually partnered up with Guangjian Technology from Shenzhen in order to make this happen, reports Engadget.

This tech is secure enough for mobile payments, and it’s coming soon

ZTE is confident in its new technology. It believes that this system is secure enough to make mobile payments. It will also support 3D modeling, it seems, and the same goes for augmented reality selfies, and some other features.

Now, we don’t know when will this technology make it into a smartphone, but we’re guessing soon. It is probably a bit much to expect both an under-display camera, and under-display facial scanning tech inside the upcoming ZTE Axon 30 Pro. It is possible, though, we’ll see.
