Android 12 may improve Android-based tablets in general, with a rather neat new feature. This feature surfaced in Android 12 Developer Preview 2, and was discovered by Mishaal Rahman.
Android tablets have been considered inferior to Apple’s iPad since… well, forever. Google should be aiming to bring forth interesting and useful features for Android tablets, and it seems like one such feature is coming with Android 12.
Android 12 Developer Preview has a hidden taskbar in the Pixel launcher, which you can see in action down below. That taskbar can appear at the bottom of the screen, and be persistent on every screen. Think of it as a taskbar on Chrome OS, kind of.

This taskbar makes it extremely easy to switch between applications, as it doesn’t require you to enter the overview mode, nor scroll. You can simply tap the app you want to switch to, and that’s it.
The source notes that the taskbar will only appear on large-screen devices, which suggests it will only be available for tablets. On the flip side, it may be available on foldables as well. We don’t know what are the screen requirements for the feature, so… we’ll have to wait and see.
This is a brand new feature for Android in general, but Samsung already has a feature like this. If you activate DeX mode on Samsung tablets, you’ll get a similar taskbar at the bottom of the display.
This does seem like an interesting feature to have on a tablet. It can certainly improve productivity on a tablet, and that is exactly what Android tablets need.
Let’s hope Google plans on bringing more features like this in the future. Do note that the fact this feature appeared in Android 12 Developer Preview 2, does not guarantee we’ll see it in a stable build. We do hope that it will make the cut, though. Also, let’s hope Android OEMs will implement it in their large-screen devices.
