Samsung‘s Galaxy Note 8 is now joining the April 2021 Android security update party. The S Pen-wielding Galaxy flagship from 2017 is currently receiving this month’s Android security maintenance release (SMR) in countless markets across Latin America. Expect the rollout to reach other regions in the coming days.

The April update for the Galaxy Note 8 comes with the firmware version N950FXXSEDUC2. It doesn’t bring any new features and/or enhancements to the device, except for the latest security patch. That’s expected though, given how long the phone has been around now. Samsung launched the phone back in August 2017, running Android 7.1 Nougat. Since then, the device has received two major updates to Android 8 Oreo and Android 9 Pie.

As far as the contents of this month’s Android SMR are concerned, there are plenty of vulnerability fixes to talk about. According to Samsung’s latest security bulletin, the April update resolves as many as 21 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are security bugs that are specific to Samsung smartphones.

On top of that, the new release also fixes six critical vulnerabilities found on Android OS. Last but not least, the update also patches more than four dozen vulnerabilities that are labeled as high-severity items. All in all, it’s a pretty big security update the Galaxy Note 8 is getting.

Galaxy Note 8 picks April security patch

Samsung recently promised to offer security updates for at least four years to all its Android smartphones and tablets. The frequency of those updates will vary between monthly, quarterly, and biannual, depending on the model as well as how long the phone has been in the market.

The Galaxy Note 8 is now in its fourth year in the market. It is currently receiving security updates quarterly. So the phone may get at most two more updates before its promised four years of software support expires in September. It may receive a few more updates after that as well, but there’s no guarantee of that.

Nonetheless, if you own a Galaxy Note 8, be on the lookout for a new update in the coming days. It’s pertinent to mention here that software updates are released in batches over the air (OTA). So the latest OTA file may not reach all eligible units simultaneously. You should receive a notification once the update becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for updates through your phone’s Settings app. Navigate to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install to trigger a manual search for the latest OTA update.
