9to5Google is reporting that YouTube is experimenting with ‘media literacy’ ads before videos. The aim of these media literacy ads will be to prompt critical thinking. They will occasionally play for 15 seconds which is just enough time to teach you something new.
YouTube has a few different experiments in the works. The company has updated its support page in order to list some of these experiments. The new YouTube ‘media literacy’ ads will only show to users that have been selected to participate.
The experiment is currently in limited circulation in the U.S. YouTube will play a short 15-second video offering useful tips. These tips will teach users how to spot trustworthy information online. These tips will pop up instead of ads.
Of course, these ads will be skippable just like other ads. As of now, the search giant is only sharing one specific video from its media literacy campaign. In this video, users are encouraged to check the source of a piece of information.
This is good to know for any source that says they are an “authority on the topic.” For anybody like that you want to make sure they are truly an authority and not some scammer. The internet has a lot of sketch information floating around, so these ads are good. Everyone could use a little bit of education on how to stay safe.
As of now, the media literacy ads will only be shown ahead of a random sample of videos. Google also says that the ads appearing before a video is not a judgment of the channel. The program may expand in the future. But, it all depends on how the early experiments go.
YouTube says it’s experimenting with ways to help people assess information online. All in an effort to suggest that users think more critically about the content that they’re consuming. YouTube is also hoping that users will offer up enough feedback about these ads going forward.
The question is now if YouTube Premium subscribers will see the ads. These ads are skippable. As a result, premium subscribers may not ever see them. However, for everyone else, these tips will be seen and should go a long way to keeping people a little safer on the internet.
Also worth keeping in mind is that depending on how the experiment goes, YouTube may remove these down the line.
