Bullitt Group, the global licensee for Cat® phones, today announced the availability of the Cat S42 H+ smartphone. The Cat S42 H+ is the first rugged mobile phone with advanced antimicrobial product protection built in it.

In this seemingly never-ending Covid-19 era, we are seeing a proliferation of devices to sanitize our mobile phones. Well, Cat has decided to take this a step further by including antimicrobial properties into the actual material making up the body of the device.

What is this antimicrobial technology in the new Cat S42 H+?

Silver has long been known to be an antimicrobial agent. So Cat worked with Addmaster to blend their proprietary Biomaster antimicrobial silver ion technology additive in the resin. Due to this technology, every exterior component of the Cat S42 H+ has built-in antimicrobial protection. By the way, H+ stands for Hygiene Plus Protection.

To back this claim, this phone has been tested to ISO22196 standard. Cat claims that test results show that their antimicrobial agent prevents bacterial cell growth by 80% within 15 minutes and 99.9% in 24 hours.

Cat S42 H+ is still as rugged as before

Like its regular counterpart, the Cat S42 H+ is still a waterproof phone certified to IP68 and IP69. So you can still fully submerge it in warm soapy water and wash it if it gets muddy or dirty. It also passes a rigorous bleach wipe test (3000 times).

The company claims to have tested this device with pressurized alcohol and multiple hand sanitizers and other chemical mixtures. Despite all of this, it still retains the antimicrobial properties to set a new standard in hygienic phone design.

With a rugged smartphone like this, you don’t need a case and now you don’t need to keep wiping it with alcohol or sanitizing liquid either. And it still meets MIL-SPEC 810H for vibration, tumble, and temperature extremes durability. Not to mention drop testing from 6ft on to steep for every side and corner multiple times.

Specs at a glance

Basically, the S42 H+ is still the same Cat S42 phone we reviewed a while ago. So specs-wise there isn’t any change but the material of construction now includes the silver ion antimicrobial agent.

You still get a 5.5″ HD+ display with Gorilla Glass 5 and a 4200 mAh battery.  The phone uses a Mediatek Helio A20 MT 6761D chipset, 1.8GHz quad-core processor. Base storage is 32GB and there is 3GB RAM onboard. The phone does have a micro SD card for additional storage which most likely you will need.

There’s dual SIM support and you do get a headphone jack. Connectivity-wise there’s NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and LTE/VoLTE options.  In addition to these, you do get a waterproof headphone jack!

Camera-wise there is a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera -nothing fancy but definitely functional. Software on the phone is still Android 10 but will be updated later this year to Android 11. And Cat promises 3 years of security updates and provides a 2-year warranty on the smartphone.

Pricing and availability of the Cat S42 H+

The Cat S42 H+ smartphone is available at $299 via www.catphones.com. It will be available to purchase at the end of April in the UK, and in the US by mid-summer. Expect it to be available at Amazon, Home Depot, Best Buy, and other retailers as usual.

On paper, the Cat S42 H+ looks like a great entry-level rugged smartphone for people who are germaphobes or want peace of mind when it comes to smartphone hygiene.
