Android 12 is still a ways off but through developer previews, users are getting a taste of what’s to come for the OS, like a power button function to activate Google Assistant.

Google’s upcoming version of the software has quite a few tools that will make the operating system more of a joy to use. Or if not more joyful, at least more functional. Since the release of Android 12 is so far out, there’s likely to be a lot about the upcoming changes that is still unknown. But the folks over at XDA have recently uncovered some new features that are on the way.

One of those new features appears to be pressing the power button activate Google Assistant. Adding to the myriad ways you can already do so. You can also press the power button to bring up your payment and loyalty cards.

Hold down the power button to trigger the Assistant in Android 12

Since we can’t test this ourselves, we’re not sure if the timing is exact. But XDA says you can trigger the Assistant by holding the power button down for a few seconds. When doing this in Android 11, nothing happens. So it’s likely that holding down the button for about three seconds will launch you into the Assistant screen you see when activating it other ways.

Some activation methods are usable only on Pixel devices. And it’s unclear if Google will do the same thing here. However it seems likely that this will be a method any Android 12 user will have access to.

Access your cards and passes from a quick settings tile

Another cool new addition appears to be the inclusion of a quick settings tile for your cards and passes. Allowing for another easy way to get at specific details about them.

This doesn’t seem like it would be any easier than pressing the power button down for a second, so why add it? It’s possible that the power button function won’t be able to bring up both the Google Assistant and your cards and passes. So if you opt for the Assistant trigger, this would give you another simple and quick way to get at your cards information. Should you need it on the fly.

Get ready for thick slider bars in Android 12

Google appears to be going all out on some specific design changes with the Android 12 UI. Namely some super thick slider bars.

While this is very prominent in the volume slider, Google is also using this design change with the brightness slider for your screen brightness in the quick settings panel. So this is likely to be the theme for anything in the system that has a slider for this version of the OS.

That doesn’t necessarily mean for apps. But simply for system-related controls.

You get a splash screen, and you get a splash screen…. everyone gets a splash screen!

Do you love splash screens and wish they’d pop up before every single app finishes launching? Well, Google does too. And it looks like more splash screens are on the way. And by more we mean every single application.

While some apps organically display a splash screen before the app finishes launching, that’s because these are developed in. But in Android 12 Google is adding an automatically generated splash screen to any app you have installed on your device.

The issue with it right now seems to be that the system can’t detect whether or not an app already has an existing splash screen in place. So it ends up showing the auto-generated one before the one that was already there.

In addition to these changes there are a handful of other minor tweaks that Google seems to be cooking up. Like a cool new charging animation and some more animated effects for touches and other elements of the UI.
