Android Auto ChargePoint

Leading electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure company ChargePoint is adding support for Android Auto to its app. Starting today, Android smartphone users can search and navigate to a nearby ChargePoint charging station right from their car’s infotainment screen. They don’t need to pick up their phones to launch the ChargePoint app while driving.

ChargePoint says your car’s dash display will show a map with all its nearby charging stations. You can select the station list for more detailed information, find directions to a station, and begin a charging session once you arrive, all from the car’s infotainment screen.

The app also lets you filter the stations by charging speed, availability, and cost. You can also check the station status and compatibility with your EV make and model. Moreover, if a station is busy, a Notify Me button will notify you when the station becomes available again.

Of course, for all this to work, you must have the ChargePoint app installed on a connected Android smartphone running Android 6.0 or above. Your vehicle also needs to be compatible with Android Auto.

ChargePoint is one of the largest networks of independent EV charging stations. Founded in 2007, the company currently operates more than 114,000 charging stations across Europe and North America. ChargePoint’s Android Auto support is available for users in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.

“We know that the shift to electric mobility relies on driver experience, and ChargePoint’s Android Auto app is another pivotal step in the evolution already underway, driven by software and increased connectivity,” said Bill Loewenthal, Senior Vice President of product at ChargePoint. “By integrating essential charging data directly into the vehicle’s infotainment system, drivers are even more empowered and informed.”

ChargePoint arrives in Android Auto, as promised

Back in August 2020, Google announced that it is working with developers to expand third-party app support on Android Auto beyond media and messaging apps, including navigation, charging, and parking. ChargePoint was one of the names that the company mentioned in that announcement.

Android Auto eventually added support for these categories in October, allowing developers to start building. Earlier this month, Google moved that support out of the beta phase. And now, ChargePoint is officially available on Android Auto.

In November last year, ChargePoint had also updated its iOS app with support for CarPlay. That update brought the same EV charging functionality inside the vehicle to iPhone users. A few months later, Android users can now enjoy the same benefits as well.
