Ericsson, Nokia, and Sony have confirmed that they won’t attend MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2021 due to COVID-19. Needless to say, these three companies represent rather big names in the tech community. This is not a good sign for MWC 2021, that’s for sure.

Most of you probably remember that MWC 2020 got cancelled due to COVID-19 last year. This year, GSMA decided to host MWC 2021, but not in the usual timeframe. MWC usually starts in the second half of February.

Well, MWC 2021 in Shanghai did take place in February, but the main event in Barcelona did not. GSMA decided to move it to late June. It is scheduled to start on June 28, and end on July 1.

COVID-19 is still a part of our lives, very much so, the situation is far from over. Ericsson, Nokia, and Sony decided to avoid MWC 2021 altogether because of it, and many more companies may follow.

If that happens, which essentially happened last year, GSMA may be forced to cancel yet another MWC. It’s too early to predict something like that, but it may happen. There’s no point in hosting MWC without the biggest names in the industry.

Ericsson is one of the largest exhibitors at MWC every year

Ericsson is one of the biggest exhibitors at MWC, so its cancellation comes as a serious blow to GSMA. The company announced that it won’t participate, citing the pandemic as the reason.

Nokia, on the other hand, said that it won’t have a physical presence at MWC 2021 in order to ensure the safety of its employees, customers, and partners. Nokia is planning to participate virtually, though.

Sony has also announced that it has no plans to travel to Barcelona. It will hold a virtual event in order to announce its products, the same thing it did last year. It will not be a part of MWC 2021, though.
