The Verge has reported that Facebook will punish rule breakers in groups to make for a better experience. Facebook’s goal is to clean up the experience in its 'Groups' by limiting the reach of potentially problematic users and communities.
Facebook announced multiple changes it will implement to groups. The announcement made on March 17 covers Facebook’s plans to put users who break rules on probation. The changes will also aim to further limit the reach of civic and political groups, and require more moderation in groups that violate Facebook’s rules.
For the group members who break Facebook’s rules, they will suffer various new consequences. Firstly, repeat violators will not be able to post or comment in any groups they are active in. This first punishment could last for seven or thirty days, but that depends on the number and severity of the violations.
In addition, these users will not be able to invite users to any groups, nor will they be able to create new groups. The more violations from members a group has will also be slapped with a warning label. When a new user tries to join one of these groups they will get a disclaimer that the group has violated community standards.
The intent is to make joining the group less attractive. In addition, Facebook will limit invite notifications for these types of groups. In effect, the group's content will show up lower in the news feed. Lastly, violating groups’ administrators and moderators will have to temporarily approve all posts. This will put pressure on the administrators to crack down on rule violators.
However, if moderators and administrators decide to approve content that breaks rules, the entire group will be taken down. Facebook has also taken a broader approach in the update and started removing civic and political group recommendations created earlier this year.
The social media giant began removing these recommendations in the US, but now it is the worldwide standard. Facebook was in hot water for allowing extremist political groups, and groups that spread conspiracy theories to thrive.
This new crackdown on rule violators should make Facebook more enjoyable for users looking to enjoy the platform. Rule breakers and violators can lead to a toxic environment that taints the entire social media platform.
Time will tell if the new initiative works or not. But, the simple fact that the company is trying to clean up its platform is promising. Other social media websites have been attempting to do the same as well.
