PlayStation Plus subscribers are in for a new portion of the subscription service called PlayStation Plus Video Pass. Though at the moment this only seems to be a small test. And not something that Sony is rolling out to all subscribers.
Spotted by Video Games Chronicle, the PlayStation plus Video Pass seems to have popped up today for a single region of users. Subscribers in Poland. Details about the new feature for PS Plus were briefly posted on Sony’s official Polish website. In addition to some images.
It’s unclear if Sony is doing this as a single regional test or if it plans to roll this out to all subscribers in the future. But it definitely sounds like something all users could get behind.
In addition to being limited to Poland, the video pass is also a trial service. One that Sony is offering for a limited time. Though limited feels like an inaccurate description due to the length of time that subscribers in Poland will have access.
Based on the description before it was pulled down, the video pass will be available for an entire year. Sony notes that subscribers in Poland will have access to the PlayStation Plus Video Pass as a benefit for a limited time. And that will be active from April 22 of 2021 until April 22 of 2022.
Why Sony is piloting the service for so long is also unclear. But access to the video pass is available at no additional charge. So subscribers don’t have to do anything save for enjoy the content.
Based on the image and the fact that this is part of PlayStation Plus, it seems users might be able to access and watch movies for free. This appears to be a substitute for the removal of all video content from the PlayStation Store on August 31 of this year.
It also looks like the free video content will be movies produced by Sony Pictures. Which would explain why the company could offer them for free. Though it’s likely it could include TV shows as well. Sony could also end up cutting deals with other studios if the video pass sticks around.
Worth noting is that while the trial is available for a year in Poland, that doesn’t mean other regions won’t get access till after that year is up. Sony could always activate it globally well before then.
