Google and Microsoft are teaming up to fix some browser compatibility issues between their respective offerings. According to Engadget, the two companies are using user data gathered via surveys, bug reports, and testing data to aid in their efforts. This move is primarily to make it easier for web developers to make cross-browser websites.
Google and Microsoft are operating under their hashtag #compat2021. The official Chromium Twitter account tweeted out recently and stated "You told us what you needed, and we listened! In 2021, we aim to eliminate the five top compatibility pain points on the web."
Google's Chrome browser and Microsoft's Edge browser are both based on the chromium platform, which should ostensibly help things along. Some of the main issues that developers have to deal with concern the CSS of the pages. Elements would look differently between Chrome and Edge, and that's a huge issue among developers.
One focus is on making sure that stickied content will look presentable across both browsers. Another focus of the two companies is with Flex items. These are items that expand to fill available space. They also shrink to avoid items spilling over. Developers have problems with CSS FlexBox not properly resizing the items across browsers. The two companies are also working on improving CSS Grid. This is responsible for dividing the page up into sections and lining them up into rows and columns. They want to make animated grid layouts for both Chromium and Webkit.
Web developers hope that these fixes will be implemented soon, but there's not much information on when to expect any significant changes. The tweet only specified some time in the year 2021. For the time being, Google launched the beta for Chrome 90 recently. Hopefully, Google will make sure that these changes will work well with this new version of Chrome. As for other updates, you can expect to see more on the Chromium Twitter, as well as Google's and Microsoft's accounts.
This is a great move on Google and Microsoft's part. They stated in their tweet that they listened to the complaints of the developers. This means that even these large corporations still pay attention to their communities. This is the type of partnership that more companies should do. Consistency is important for web developers to be able to make high-quality websites. This will hopefully inspire more companies to follow in their footsteps and implement developer-friendly changes to their platforms.
