The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are here, but don't expect them to work on AT&T 5G. That is because, they won't.

You see, with its 5G Network, AT&T wants all unlocked phones to be certified by it, to work on that network. And since the OnePlus 9 series are not certified by AT&T, they won't work on its 5G network. But if you're fine with 4G LTE, then the OnePlus 9 series will work fine on AT&T. Just don't expect to get those insanely fast speeds.

So if you're on AT&T and thinking about buying either the OnePlus 9 or the OnePlus 9 Pro, you'll want to keep that in mind.

This is why 5G is more confusing than 4G ever was

4G was pretty confusing, with the carriers all doing their own thing. But once everyone had 4G LTE, pretty much any unlocked phone worked on any carrier network. As long as the bands were supported, and they usually were.

But with 5G, carriers want to call the shots a bit more. Verizon did start to do the whole certification thing with smartphones on its 4G network a few years ago. But that was a pretty simple process and usually done ahead of the launch of a phone. However, when it comes to AT&T, they are letting very few unlocked 5G smartphones on its network. Almost shutting them all out. With really only the Pixel being the only 5G phone on its network that you can buy elsewhere.

Certification itself isn't a bad thing. This keeps the network from getting attacked or harmed. We did see a case where an update to a phone rendered a network useless in the early days of 4G LTE. So there's good reason to do this, but it should be done behind the scenes. And this just shows that OnePlus is still not as big as Samsung or even Apple.
