In June last year, a major executive reshuffle saw Google appoint Prabhakar Raghavan as the new head of Search/Assistant, Maps, and Ads. Mr. Raghavan has now named new executives to help him run the businesses. All the newly-appointed leadership roles will report up to him.
As reported by Search Engine Land, Elizabeth Reid will now lead core search experiences, like Images. Reid has been at Google for over 17 years and has vast experience with the company’s search products and services. She previously led the Google Maps and other Geo-related engineering teams. Under the new role, both product and engineering teams of Google’s search experiences will report to her.
Products like Google Apps, Google News, and Google Discover, as well as other ecosystem efforts such as web initiatives, are now led by Cathy Edwards. Co-founder and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of app search and discovery platform Chomp, which was acquired by Apple in February 2012, Edwards worked at the Cupertino giant as Director, Evaluation and Quality, Apple Maps.
She left Apple in 2014 and founded a new stealth startup in 2015. Google acquired her new startup in 2016 and she has been with the company ever since. She previously led Image search and was a VP of engineering.
Another notable leadership change at Google sees Sissie Hsiao take up Assistant product and engineering. She will replace Scott Huffman as the head of engineering of Assistant. It’s unclear whether Huffman, who has been with Google for over 15 years, is leaving the company or has been given a new role. The report says he “will be seeking new opportunities” after leading Assistant engineering for many years.
Hsiao is also a long-time Google vet. Joined back in 2006, she worked in various roles at the company, overseeing services like Google Docs, Google Search, and Google Analytics. Most recently, she oversaw display, video, and app advertising, a role that has now been taken over by Tim Craycroft.
The latest executive reshuffle at Google also involves a few other leadership changes. Nick Fox, a VP of Search and Assistant, is now leading the business that focuses on long-term bets.
Bill Ready, the former PayPal COO who joined Google last year and has been overseeing commerce, will pick up Payments and the Next Billion Users initiative. These two businesses were without a leader since Caesar Sengupta announced his departure from the company last month.
According to Business insider, Dave Besbris, an engineering VP working under Mr. Raghavan’s leadership bench, would be stepping down. It’s unclear whether he will take up a new role or leave the company.
Search/Assistant, Maps, and Ads, the businesses led by Mr. Prabhakar Raghavan, are among Google’s most important and profitable products and services. The recent leadership changes could now help the company further bolster the growth of these businesses. Google has notified these changes internally in a memo to employees.
