Google canceling April Fools’ Day jokes last year was a letdown. The April Fools’ Day jokes from various businesses were canceled last year as well do the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision was to avoid any tensions emerging from the pandemic last year makes sense. But two years in a row?
9t05Google reported that the canceling will happen again. Many can agree that this pandemic needs to end as soon as possible. It is still ravaging the world and causing problems for billions of people. As a result, Google will be holding off on its April Fools’ Day jokes once more.
Google’s VP of global marketing, Marvin Chow, says the company will “pause” its April Fools’ Day again this year due to serious challenges still being faced. Business insider received the original message below:
Throughout the past year, I have been so inspired by how helpful our products, programs, and people have been during humanity’s toughest times. We’ve done it with sensitivity and empathy, reflecting the range of challenging experiences so many are experiencing globally.
As you will remember, last year we made the decision to pause our longstanding Google tradition of celebrating April Fools’ Day, out of respect for all those fighting COVID-19. With much of the world still grappling with serious challenges, we feel we should again pause the jokes for April Fools’ Day this year. Like we did last year, we should continue to find appropriate ways to bring moments of joy to our users throughout the year (e.g. Doodles, easter eggs, etc.)
It is the little things in life that can keep people pushing forward. Despite that Google’s decision is a good one. There are plenty of ways for the tech giant to give joy and happiness to the world.
Google confirms that the above message is in fact genuine. It is sad though because 9to5Google did see one potential prank. The prank was going to focus on Google Stadia. The prank was going to tease the game-streaming platform's ability to stream games on 56k internet connections.
That is clearly a joke because there is no way that would work. It would be nice to see that prank see the light of day, but there is no proof it will show up. The world is still fighting the fall out of the pandemic in every way.
Semiconductors are in short supply causing tech companies around the world to scramble for stock.
