An update to Google Search algorithms will soon alter how it ranks product reviews and sorts them to be shown to users. That’s based on recent reports detailing the announcement, made earlier this week.
In effect, what this change will do is give people the results they want in a more insightful manner, specifically as that applies to product reviews that appear in a Google Search. Google indicates that what users typically look for goes beyond the typical, press-release-like reviews some sites post. Instead, users want “in-depth research” and insights.
Google released a list of “questions to consider” when it comes to product reviews as well. That provides some insight into exactly what will constitute a “good” product review for users. That’s to say, how this change to Google Search will help users looking for reviews. And what exactly reviewers should be doing to ensure that their content ranks well.
The reviews need to, just for starters, express expert knowledge about the products where that’s appropriate. And they need to show what the product is like, physically, how it’s used, and with unique insights beyond what information manufacturers provide.
Moreover, reviews will need to provide “quantitative measurements” to compare products in various categories of performance. And that includes discussing the benefits and drawbacks of the product, how it evolves from previous models, how it compares to other similar products — with consideration for use cases — and what sets a given product apart from competitors.
Google also says that it may be useful to question “key decision-making factors” for a product’s category. And how it performs in those areas. That’s in addition to examining key choices the company has made in terms of design. And how those design decisions impact overall useability and specific use cases.
The changes to Google Search for product reviews are, in fact, already here. At least for English language content. The search giant hasn’t detailed when further language content will be added to the mix. But, for now, the update been rolling out for English since April 8.
