HMD Global's Chief Product Officer (CPO), Mr. Juho Sarvikas, has announced his exit from the company. The top-level executive made the announcement on his official Twitter handle earlier this week, ending a 15-year run at Nokia. The announcement came as a surprise but he didn't tell whether he's leaving the Finnish company with immediate effect.
However, Nokiamob.net claims that Mr. Sarvikas will leave HMD Global at the end of April. So we should see him at the company's upcoming event on April 8th, announcing new Nokia devices one last time before leaving the company. Nokia is expected to launch several new products, including two affordable 5G handsets – the Nokia X10 and Nokia X20 – at the event.
Mr. Juho Sarvikas has been with Nokia for more than 15 years, i.e. through all those turbulent years between 2010 and 2016 when the company saw multiple changes in ownership, leadership, and business strategies. He has been the face of the Nokia brand since its return in the smartphone industry under HMD GLobal in 2016.
Mr. Sarvikas was named the CPO at HMD Global on its inception in 2016. He was responsible for product creation, from concept to launch, as well as defining product strategy for the company. He was also responsible for establishing key strategic partnerships with carriers.
Under his watchful eyes, HMD Global made Nokia a relevant name in the smartphone industry once again. Juho was the man behind decisions like introducing some Nokia classics such as the Nokia 3310 in modern avatars.
In June 2020, HMD Global named Mr. Sarvikas the Vice President of the company's North America business, targeting the world's largest smartphone market as a strategic region and aiming to grow its business there. The company, which has licensed the Nokia brand for phones and tablets till 2027, is now aiming big – a top-three spot in the global smartphone industry within the next few years.
While Nokia did start well in its return to the smartphone market, the company has been struggling to attract enough buyers in recent times. Poor design choices and incompetent device performance, coupled with supply chain issues, have affected the company badly. Adding to the troubles, the company's Chief Product Officer has now decided to leave as well.
Mr. Sarvikas hasn't revealed his future plans as yet. Nevertheless, we wish him all the best in his future endeavors. It will be interesting to see who HMD Global replaces him with.
