Instagram is reportedly working on new privacy-driven features, including Safety Check and Encrypted Messaging.

According to Droidmaze, these features have appeared on the Beta version of the Android app, and they’ve been discovered through reverse engineering. These new features will focus on the user’s privacy.

The first feature is Safety Check that will appear in the sidebar as a new menu. Safety Check menu encompasses options for activating Two Factor Authentication, hiding bad comments or specific words, determining the eligible persons for messaging to you, and deciding about who can tag you in photos.

However, the Safety Check is not a new thing, and it just brings together the scattered privacy options in the app. So users can easily access privacy options in one place.

The second one is Encrypted Messaging that aims to enhance the security of messaging on the platform. As per the leaked screenshot, video calls are not available in the Encrypted Messaging. However, this is a taste of the Beta version, and Instagram may add video calls to the final version of Encrypted Messaging.

Of course, Instagram has been working on Encrypted Messaging for months, and it was first spotted in February. After that, it was on April 19 that app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi reported that Instagram is working on end-to-end encryption for chats.

It’s worth noting that these features are not yet available to the users. However, if you know application reverse engineering, you can access them in the APK file.

Instagram is working on a bunch of new privacy features

In recent months, Instagram has focused heavily on adding privacy-driven features. First, it was reported that Facebook might release the kid’s version on Instagram. This special version will be for kids under 13, and it’s bare of features that might violate their privacy.

Keyword muting feature in direct messages was another feature that Instagram added in March. This feature will appear in the “Content controls” section and allow users to mute special words in their DMs. Then, messages that contain the muted words will be blocked. Muting words in DMs is a practical feature for public figures and celebrities who receive hateful speeches in their DMs.

Adding more privacy-driven features will help Instagram to be a healthier platform for users. Now, many users are complaining about receiving hateful speeches in comments and DMs.
