Well here's some good news about LG's smartphone business closing, they may actually update your phone now. LG has never been great with updates, and many still don't have Android 11. Even though it launched in September 2020 – a full seven months ago. So this is a bit of a surprise, but we'll believe it when we see it.

LG announced that it will continue to provide software updates, and some phones might get updated to Android 12. The press release noted that LG will "provide service support and software updates fort customers of existing mobile products for a period of time which will vary by region." Which sounds a bit like its software rollout prior to it shutting down its smartphone business.

The Android 11 rollout will continue as previously announced

LG says that it will continue to roll out Android 11 on the schedule it had already announced. They are also planning to bring Android 12 to some of their devices.

LG does warn that their OS upgrade plans will be adjusted based on Google's schedule, as well as the performance of each device while working on and testing the update. Basically, if Android 12 doesn't perform well on the Velvet, don't expect to get the update.

While LG has not said which devices would get Android 12, we'd expect it to only be available on its recent flagship smartphones, like the LG Velvet, V60 ThinQ and the Wing. And those may not even get the update. We'll have to wait and see.

Software updates have not been LG's strong suit, so we'd be surprised to see Android 12 roll out this year. And we likely won't see a whole lot of security updates either, and definitely not on time. But we would love to be wrong this time around. However, with LG not making any more money off of its mobile customers, it's likely that updates will be put on the back burner.
