Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell is a new Wi-Fi doorbell camera from Lorex Technology. Lorex is a well-known brand name when it comes to home security cameras. The Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell promises a great quality picture with no monthly cloud storage plan.

The packaging is like a small personal pizza box. Inside are stickers, a quick start guide, some other paperwork, and the slim doorbell. In the insert are a mounting base, wedges, drill bit, screws, wiring for the chime kit, micro SD card, and a micro USB cable.

Tech Specs for the Lorex Video Doorbell

The Lorex 2K QHD video doorbell has a 2x 1080p HD resolution camera with a 164-degree horizontal field-of-view (FOV). It also has Full Duplex two-way audio communication including a microphone with noise cancellation. For Night Vision the doorbell has 850nm Infrared LEDs with an IR Cut Filter. Network Connectivity via Wi-Fi is  2.4GHz/ 5GHz 802.11 b/g/n/ac.

It has an IP 65 rating and an operating temperature range of -4°F to 122°F. It needs a wired connection with the existing door chime wiring. For continuous charging, a transformer with 16-24 VAC, is recommended. You will need to purchase this transformer separately and it typically costs less than $20 including tax.

Installing the Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell is quite easy

Installation is pretty quick for the doorbell in the front of the house. However, this does require prior installation of the charging transformer. Luckily my existing transformer met the requirements so no additional work was necessary. Your mileage however may vary.

Step one is to connect the doorbell to the Lorex Home app and create an account. You need to tap the + icon in the app to add the doorbell and scan the QR code unique to the doorbell.

Next is the installation of the chime kit because we have a mechanical chime. Following the instructions, it took probably about 10 minutes to get the mechanical chime kit installed inside of the existing doorbell housing.

Finally, let's come to the actual doorbell installation. The instructions are pretty straightforward. Mark the location to drill the holes with the drill bit in the box. Add the anchors and secure the mounting bracket. In my case, I kept the installation simple with the vertical flat-mount. Depending on the location of the current doorbell switch and/or how you want the camera to positioned will decide your particular installation. The Quick Start Guide has plenty of instructions with good pictures to help you get the doorbell installed.

To remove the doorbell for any reason use the SIM tool in the box and insert it into the pinhole at the bottom of the mounting bracket. You may need to do this to add an SD card with more memory. One thing I noticed is that the mounting plate plastic is not as thick or sturdy as the competition. Other than that the installation was quite easy.

Lorex Home App Overview

Now that the doorbell is installed and running you can customize it for your preferences via the Lorex Home App. Below you can see a quick overview of the various settings that allow for customization.

The only item I left unchecked was the Night Light Mode since I have outdoor lighting that activates via a motion sensor. I think any missing items there can be improved via a software update. Take a look at the various app menus in the gallery below.

Using the Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell

Since the installation, I have been using the doorbell for about 7 days now. The video quality is excellent. The notifications on the app are instantaneous whether in the house or out and about. I like the two-way calling and the ability to send preset quick responses.

Now my front door faces the street, so to avoid unnecessary motion detection I left the setting on Medium sensitivity. To get the indoor chime to work correctly took a bit of effort. The feature needs to be turned on from the Lorex Home App. This set of instructions is missing from the Quick Start Guide.

Look at the clarity of the picture in broad daylight. Nighttime pictures aren't too bad either.

So overall, I will say that my experience with the Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell after a week plus of use is quite positive. Specifically, I like that I can hear a physical chime instead of just relying on my smartphone. I also love the Rich Notifications with the preview image and the Pre-Roll footage is an excellent addition to an already feature-rich device and app.

The new Lorex 2K QHD Video Doorbell is a great option for those looking for a high-quality image/video and expandable video storage. The app is relatively quite easy to use and you get Google Assistant or Alexa Integration. The motion and person detection features are excellent and the price is competitive despite no annual monitoring plan.
