The March 2021 Android security patch is now rolling out for Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 series. Both the Galaxy Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra are currently receiving the latest security maintenance release in several European countries. The rollout should expand to other regions in the coming weeks.
The latest software update bears the firmware version N981BXXS1DUC1 and N986BXXS1DUC1 for the Galaxy Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra respectively. Since it is just a security patch, the download size is quite small. According to a SamMobile report, the latest update for the Galaxy Note 20 series is approximately a 166MB download over the air (OTA).
As far as the contents of the new update are concerned, don't be too hopeful for any new features. It is just a security update that brings bug fixes and stability improvements to the 2020 Samsung flagships. The March 2021 security patch specifically tackles three vulnerabilities exclusive to the Exynos 990 SoC. This chipset powers the international variants of the Galaxy Note 20 phones.
Two of those three vulnerabilities are classified as high-severity threats while the third one is classified as a low-risk threat. Overall, the latest security maintenance release contains fixes for four critical and dozens of high-risk vulnerabilities found in the Android OS. It also patches 19 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are software vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung devices.
Samsung started rolling out the March 2021 Android security patch to its devices towards the last week of February. The Galaxy Note 10 was the first device to pick up the latest security maintenance release. Since then, the company has pushed the new update to the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy A50, and several other devices. The Galaxy Note 20 phones are now picking up the update as well.
If you live in the European region and own either the Galaxy Note 20 or the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, you should receive a notification to download the new OTA update anytime now if you haven't already. Users in other regions should also expect to receive the latest update in the coming weeks.
However, since updates are released in batches, they may not be available for all eligible units simultaneously. You can manually check for updates by going to the Software update section of your phone's Settings app. There, hit the Download and install option to check if you have any updates pending download.
