Microsoft surface duo

After a prolonged wait, Microsoft finally launched its first dual-screen phone Surface Duo in September last year. Now, according to a Windows Latest report, the company is gearing up to launch its successor, codenamed "Zeta". And by the looks of it, the second-gen Surface Duo will support 5G connectivity and will offer improved camera performance.

Microsoft has multiple job listings that suggest this development. Firstly, the company is looking for SW/FW Engineer II in Taipei, Taiwan to help "create new experiences with Surface Duo". Job responsibilities include "designing and coding RF drivers, RF board bring up including LTE and 5G technologies, factory tools, modem protocols, mobile operator certifications, and PTCRB/GCF certifications" on Surface Duo devices.

Microsoft wants to hire someone who has "deep familiarity" with 5G radio technologies. So it's pretty much evident that the company wants to enable 5G connectivity in the next-gen Surface Duo devices.

A second job listing, meanwhile, hints at improved camera performance on "future Surface products". Microsoft has a job opening for "Principal Android Camera System Architect/Engineer – Surface Development" with expert knowledge and experience in mobile camera technology.

The company intends to use AI and machine learning to deliver a "great" camera experience to consumers. It also plans to work with other camera application developers to create new photo editing tools for Duo devices.

Next-gen Surface Duo may come with 5G and improved camera

The Microsoft Surface Duo arrived in September last year with a price tag of $1,399. Its dual-screen design opens up new possibilities in mobile productivity. However, the device has a lot of shortcomings that we cannot look beyond, largely because of its steep pricing.

It is powered by an outdated Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, lacks NFC and wireless charging, and, of course, does not support 5G connectivity. The entire unit features just one camera sensor, that too without OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). Microsoft offers the device in a single 128GB variant in some regions and you aren't getting expandable storage either.

All these limitations mean the Surface Duo was received with mixed reactions despite all the potential it has. So it's nice to see that Microsoft trying to fix some of those with the second-gen Duo. Of course, the company hasn't confirmed that it's working on the Surface Duo 2 (or whatever else the next-gen Duo may be called), but there's no reason why it wouldn't launch a second dual-screen phone.

That said, Microsoft only recently made the original Duo available outside the US. So it's unlikely that the Surface Duo 2 will arrive in the market this year. For the time being, we will have to wait and see how the company plans to make its Duo devices more appealing to consumers.
