YouTube Shorts is beginning to roll out to users in the US through the Android YouTube app. The feature, which has been available for months now for users in India, is comparable to the short-form video content that you can find on TikTok.
Videos are typically around a minute long and offer a basic set of features similar to what TikTok offers. Originally the feature was launched for users in India back in the middle of December of last year. The popularity of it seems to have pushed YouTube to now expand the availability of Shorts to more users in other regions. Starting with the US.
Plans to launch the feature for US users in March was announced in the middle of February. But at the time there was no date mentioned.
Right now the US rollout of the Shorts feature is in beta. So it's not a full rollout and likely means that not everyone has access at the moment.
Shorts will be displayed in your feed when you launch the app and seem to be a little bit further down the feed once you begin scrolling. They'll be listed in a carousel-style interface, allowing you to scroll through by swiping left or right. Unlike standard videos though, they don't have the capability to autoplay through the content.
You do however have some interactivity with them after clicking on the short. With the ability to leave comments, send likes, dislikes, and share the content with others outside of YouTube.
Unsurprisingly, the Shorts that pop up in your feed after launching the YouTube app seems to be based on content you already consume.
Not necessarily the exact same channels you already watch full videos from. But shorts that are similar in terms of topics. Like food, gaming, etc. Though some also seem to be just general recommendations that all users are getting.
If you don't see Shorts in your feed yet it's possible that it may not have been pushed out to your app yet. Whether or not Google had originally intended to roll the feature out this early in March is unclear. But a fair majority of users should already be able to see and play around with it.
