Microsoft has been looking to make a cloud-based PC service for a while now. It has been silent on the whole project recently, but some news has just come up about it. According to ZDNet, Microsoft’s cloud-based PC service might actually launch this summer.

Microsoft’s cloud-based PC service to be called ‘Project Deschutes’

Last year, it was reported that Microsoft was looking to create a desktop-as-a-service. Now, sources are saying that the service can be expected relatively soon. Codenamed Project Deschutes, it will give users the ability to access their computer’s software via the web. The software will be hosted entirely on the cloud.

Microsoft hasn’t officially stated any information about this service or the launch date. A significant source of information came from a job posting by Microsoft on their career site. On it, they said that Project Deschutes “…allows all users to be productive from anywhere, on any device with a cloud-powered, secure, and always up to date Windows experience.”

As for what kinds of applications that will be on the cloud, sources say that it’ll be able to run Microsoft Office. We’re in the dark on other types of applications. Developers may be contacted by Microsoft to have their programs hosted on the cloud.

We’re expecting a Summer launch, but there’s no word on the price

Though there’s no definite launch date, sources claim that we can expect to see this launching later this summer, sometime around June or early July. This time frame aligns with Microsoft’s Inspire Partner Conference that’s rumored to be happening around the same time. Microsoft may make an official reveal during the conference.

Sources also believe that there will be certain price tiers to the service. We can expect monthly and yearly plans. There’s no word on the price, but it’ll undoubtedly be expensive for businesses that need to provide computers to hundreds of employees. As for personal use, we hope to see some reasonable prices. There may be higher price tiers for more storage and more power-intensive applications.

There could be major benefits to cloud-based PCs

Anyone who’s familiar with the concept of cloud gaming would be able to wrap their mind around this. Cloud-based PCs could alleviate some of the drawbacks of traditional computing. Firstly, your software is locked to the physical hardware of your computer. If your computer is home, your software is too. Being able to remotely access your whole operating system from other devices could be a boon- especially if the service could extend to smartphones.

Also, if your hardware slows down, it drags down your software, and consequently, your productivity. Having your software processed on multi-billion dollar servers means that the sky is the limit. You wouldn’t have to worry about your processor’s capabilities or it losing steam after a while.

Cloud-based PCs could be the next frontier in computing. Only time will tell if it will be more fruitful than cloud-based gaming.
