In news that should be surprising to nobody, YouTube is the most popular social media platform again. Engadget reports that both YouTube and Facebook are still the biggest social media platforms in the United States. Unfortunately for Facebook, it is no longer growing.

A report on how Americans used social media from Pew Research Center is where these statistics come from. The report says that YouTube and Facebook are the most widely used platforms. But YouTube is still growing and increasing. In Fact, the platform increased from 73% of adults to 81% in 2021.

This makes sense since everyone was in lockdown last year, and as a result, many most likely gravitated to YouTube. Those same users are still glued to the platform it would seem. Now, Facebook’s numbers are the same as they were in 2019. Facebook still has 69 percent as it did two years ago.

According to Pew Research, “Facebook’s growth has leveled off over the last five years, but remains one of the most widely used social media sites among adults in the United States.” However, Facebook is not alone. The only other social media platform that really saw growth is Reddit. Since 2019 Reddit grew from 11% to 18% in two years.

YouTube is the most popular social media platform, surprising nobody.

Pew Research says “This represents a broader trend that extends beyond the past two years in which the rapid adoption of most of these sites and apps are seen in the last decade has slowed.”

Even though growth is slowing down, Americans are still just as addicted to social media. Facebook users, 49% of them, say they check the site multiple times a day. 45% of Snapchat users use the app more than once a day. Instagram sees 38% of its users doing the same thing.

Now, TikTok’s data is not included for 2019. However, 21% of Americans do say they use TikTok according to Pew Research. However, TikTok is definitely more popular among the younger demographic.

48% of Tiktok users are between the ages of 18 to 29. YouTube is the big dog though among the younger generation with 95% utilizing the platform. Next, after YouTube is Instagram with 71%. Then Facebook comes in at 70%. Lastly is Snapchat with 65%.

YouTube being the most popular is not surprising. A user can log in to YouTube to watch one video. Then, 6-hours later can be watching something that is unrelated to the original video. YouTube is like a limitless rabbit hole that makes it as easy as possible to watch videos in small or large chunks.
