Motorola has just posted a teaser for a new Snapdragon 870 5G-powered smartphone. The 18-second video published on Twitter gives us a glimpse of the upcoming device, without revealing its name or any other specifications apart from the processor. However, from what we have seen over the past few weeks, this should be the rumored Moto G100.
The handset recently popped up on Geekbench with the Snapdragon 870 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and Android 11 on board. Reports suggest that it will arrive as the global version of the Moto Edge S that launched in China towards the end of January this year. Taking a closer look at the video further suggests so.
The device shown in the official teaser video sports a glossy blue finish. It features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button that sits just below the volume controls on the right side. There's also seemingly a customizable multi-function button above the SIM tray on the left side. The bottom edge of the phone has cutouts for a single down-firing speaker, a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microphone.
All these details corroborate with the Moto Edge S. So it should be safe to assume that the device teased by Motorola in the new video is indeed the global version of the China-only phone. And leaks and rumors over the past few weeks have pretty much confirmed that it will debut outside China with the market name Moto G100.
The Moto Edge S was the first smartphone to feature the new Snapdragon 870 5G SoC. Qualcomm announced this chipset in mid-January with low-cost flagships in mind. Based on a 7nm architecture, the chipset has its prime CPU core running at a maximum frequency of 3.2GHz. This is the highest clock speed in a mobile SoC to date.
While Motorola has officially confirmed the Snapdragon 870 5G processor on the new phone, it's unclear whether it will be an exact copy of the Moto Edge S. Anyways, now that the company is officially teasing the device, it shouldn't be too long before we see it fully. "There is much more to come, stay tuned!" the company said. Germany could be one of the first markets to get the Moto G100 as Motorola Germany has shared the teaser.
To recall, the Moto Edge S arrived in the Chinese market with a starting price of CNY1,999 (roughly $310). If Motorola manages to price the phone similarly in the US and European markets as well, it would be a compelling upper mid-range offering. Stay tuned for the official introduction in the coming weeks.
