If you are a fan of the National Treasure movies here is some good news for you. The Verge via Deadline has reported that a National Treasure reboot is coming to Disney Plus as a streaming TV show. The new reboot will have a ten-episode season that will reimagine the treasure hunting franchise with a younger, more diverse cast.
The new character Jess Morales will reportedly be the new main character. Jess Morales is a twenty-two-year-old DREAMer who will “uncover her mysterious family history and uncover loss treasure”. Mira Nair will direct the new show and is looking to examine “issues of identity, community, historical authorship and patriotism”.
In the original movies, a more apolitical stance on American history is on display. Symbols of American history such as the Declaration of Independence are used as American-themed clues in an Indian Jones-esque treasure hunt.
With that in mind having a reboot delving more into America and its place in history will be fun to watch. Thankfully the reboot will bring some older talent back to keep the series’ unique feel. Jerry Bruckheimer produced the original two films and will make a return to the project.
In addition, Marian and Cormac Wibberley will join Jerry Bruckheimer. Both were apart of the writing team on both Nation Treasure and the sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets. A third sequel in the National Treasure film series has been the works, but the new coming show is separate from it.
Disney Plus has been on a roll with its original streaming TV shows. First was Wanda Vision which over the course of nine episodes took viewers on a journey explaining what Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch has been up to since Avengers Endgame.
The show is a success and sets up future movies perfectly. Now, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier which premiered on March 19 is looking to keep up that momentum with another blockbuster TV show. Disney has plenty of properties to use to create new shows that will hook viewers.
The National Treasure series is no exception. The movies are good and were well received when they were released years ago. If any company can take the movies and make them into a successful TV show it is Disney.
Under their roof, they have Marvel who was able to build the biggest connected cinematic universe ever. As a result, if they find themselves struggling they can always turn to Marvel for help.
