OnePlus 6 and 6T users recently got the news that they would be waiting a while to get Android 11. Thanks to a post on GitHub, we now know that users of these phones can have the update sooner with the help of LineageOS. The update is available, but it’ll involve some work to get it installed.
Just recently, OnePlus stated in a forum post that OnePlus 6 and 6T users were going to be waiting until late August to get the open beta for Android 11. This would lead to a possible late fall or winter release for the stable version. Folks who don’t want to wait that long, and who know how to install custom ROMs onto their devices, are in luck. People can now have Andriod 11 via LineageOS.
A handful of devices are running the latest version of Android on the back of LineageOS. The only issue is that if you’re not familiar with installing custom ROMs onto your device, you may want to just wait for the official update. It requires some technical know-how and an external device like a computer. It’s possible to render your device unusable if done wrong.
At the time of writing this article, the update is ready to be downloaded for the OnePlus 6T model phones, but the update for the regular OnePlus 6 model is still in the works. According to Android Police, the update for the OnePlus 6 will be available soon. This makes sense because the OnePlus launched with Android 8, while its premium sibling launched with Android 9.
This version of LineageOS also comes with the April security patch. That’s great because no one wants to install software with outdated security.
Sometimes, getting an older phone will do you just fine. Since the OnePlus 6/6T phones will get Android 11 via LineageOS 18.1, they might be some of the better options. The 1080p+ AMOLED displays were similar, with the difference being that the notch was much smaller on the OnePlus 6T. They both came with the Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 640 GPU. Also, they both come with a max storage of 256 GB and 8 GB of RAM.
Their camera technology was noticeably behind the competition, but it should hold up today. They had a double camera setup with a 16 MP main camera and a 20 MP wide camera. The OnePlus 6 and 6T had 3,300 and 3,700 mAh batteries, respectively.
You can pick up a OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T now for less than $300. They should still do you just fine as a daily driver, especially with Android 11 loaded on.
