OnePlus has decided to give ‘Fnatic’ mode a new name. It is now called ‘Pro Gaming’, and the company has a good reason for a change. The company’s partnership with ‘Fnatic’ has ended, so… it had to change the name.
OnePlus first collaborated with the professional eSports organization Fnatic back in 2019, with the OnePlus 7 series. This partnership brought a new gaming mode to the company’s devices. On top of that, the company also rolled out an easter egg, and a couple of Fnatic-themed wallpapers.
Fnatic mode did reach some older OnePlus phones as well, and continued coming to new ones. It became an integral part of OxygenOS. Well, the Fnatic name may be gone, but it seems like the functionality remains.
This change has become visible in OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 3 for the OnePlus 7 series. This beta build is based on Android 11, needless to say. The update included some optimizations, and bug fixes, but also this name change that wasn’t mentioned.
The change was spotted by a Reddit user ‘u/T1Az’. Folks over at XDA Developers wanted to confirm this change, as OnePlus didn’t, and they managed to find several new ‘Pro Gaming Mode’ strings in the OnePlus Games app.
Following that, XDA reached out to OnePlus for a comment. OnePlus then confirmed that the partnership with Fnatic has come to an end. The company also confirmed that users will continue to receive the same features and capabilities, but under a new name.
OnePlus said that the new naming update will transition across devices starting from the 6 series. So, if you do own a OnePlus 6 or newer device, you’ll soon see ‘Pro Gaming Mode’ on your phone, instead of the ‘Fnatic Mode’.
This partnership was always about branding/marketing, it seems, so you shouldn’t see any changes when it comes to functionality, as OnePlus confirmed. The aforementioned wallpapers and an easter egg will probably be gone, though, as they contain ‘Fnatic’ branding.
