OnePlus recently confirmed that the ultrawide cameras on its upcoming OnePlus 9 series will use a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor. Now the company CEO Pete Lau has shared a sample from the new camera, teasing improved, "distortion-free" ultrawide photography.
Lau has posted a couple of pictures on his official Twitter account. One is captured with a conventional ultrawide camera, while the other is taken with the Sony IMX766 sensor on the OnePlus 9 series. As you can see in the images below, the photo taken with the OnePlus 9 is free of distortion or has minimal lens distortion as compared to the other.
"Ultra-wide photography literally broadens your horizons. Shouldn’t it also keep them true?" Lau says, suggesting that the OnePlus 9 series produces "true-to-life" ultrawide images.
From what we have seen so far, imaging will be a big focus of the OnePlus 9 series. The company has already confirmed that the upcoming phones will use a custom Sony IMX789 sensor for the primary camera. This camera has dual native ISO and supports Digital Overlap HDR, real-time HDR video processing, and 4K video at 120fps.
However, it's not just the hardware capabilities that OnePlus is focusing on. The company recently announced a partnership with Hasselblad, the veteran Swedish camera company, for what will presumably be improved post-processing and camera tuning. Perhaps, the distortion-free ultrawide photo shared by Mr. Pete Lau is a result of Hasselblad's post-processing and not just the strength of the Sony IMX766 sensor.
OnePlus has been actively teasing the new camera sensors on the OnePlus 9 series as well as its partnership with Hasselblad over the past few days. CEO Pete Lau himself has been at the forefront of all this.
"A camera should always let you see the world in its natural colors. And that's one of the first things we worked on by developing a new Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad," he recently wrote on Twitter, sharing another camera sample.
Long story short, the OnePlus 9 series is clearly shaping up to be a photography powerhouse. We are expecting three models – the vanilla OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, and the OnePlus 9R. The Pro model should boast everything that OnePlus has been teasing recently. The 9R, on the other hand, is the most affordable of the trio and will likely miss out on many of those "pro-grade" features. We will know what each of the three OnePlus 9 phones is capable of soon – on March 23rd, to be precise. Until then, expect more camera teasers from OnePlus on your way.
