Earlier today, Oppo announced that it has collaborated with the likes of Vodafone, Qualcomm, and Ericsson to bring the first 5G SA (Standalone Architecture) network in Germany. This promises to provide faster and more reliable 5G speeds, but for the time being, it’s only limited to the Oppo Find X3 Pro, which recently was released.

The first cities that will be able to take advantage of this new 5G connectivity are Dusseldorf, Munster, and Leipzig. Oppo also stated that there will be a software update released which will essentially “flip the switch” to bring compatibility with the 5G SA network. The company states that the update is coming “ideally within April”, so you’re likely only a couple of weeks away from seeing the update arrive.

Oppo’s work with the three other companies has been in the works since November of last year, in an effort to provide a more stable 5G connection. Currently, the 5G NSA commercial connectivity is what is widely used, but offers around 20ms of latency, which is not the greatest experience. With 5G SA, you’ll be able to see latency as low as 1ms, as the technology makes use of 5G cell towers versus using the much-older LTE network infrastructure.

The goal of this collaboration to hopefully bring more reliable 5G connectivity, as the current infrastructure is very hit or miss when it comes to network speeds, latency, and reliability. There was no mention of when the 5G SA network capabilities could roll out to more cities and more countries, but we expect that to come at a later time depending on the results of this current rollout.
