Qualcomm is throwing smartphone chipsets left, right, and center right now. Since the beginning of December last year, the company has launched the Snapdragon 888, Snapdragon 678, Snapdragon 480, Snapdragon 870, and the Snapdragon 860 with varying sets of specifications and features. Now, we have the Snapdragon 780G 5G joining the mix.
Interestingly, Qualcomm seems to have pulled down the press release announcing the new chipset. While it's unclear why the chip giant did so, a cached version of the webpage is still accessible, revealing all the information we need to know about the Snapdragon 780G.
To begin with, the Snapdragon 780G 5G is the first 5nm chipset in the Snapdragon 700 series. According to a Wikimovel entry, the new processor is manufactured by Samsung Foundry, much like Qualcomm's latest flagship, the Snapdragon 888.
This octa-core chipset has two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores running at 2.4GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8GHz. The Adreno 642 GPU handles the graphics duties. The Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System promises peak download speeds of 3.3 Gbps on sub-6 GHz networks.
For the first time in a Snapdragon 700 series chipset, Qualcomm is offering Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, as well as the recently-launched Snapdragon Sound technology. With FastConnect 6900 Connectivity System, the Snapdragon 780G delivers up to 3.6 Gbps data transfer rates over Wi-Fi 6. The chipset also supports Wi-Fi 6E.
The Snapdragon 780G gets the 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine with the Qualcomm Hexagon 770 processor. It can deliver up to 12 TOPS (Trillions or Tera Operations per Second) AI performance. Qualcomm says the chipset offers enhanced voice and video calls with AI-based noise suppression and voice assistant interactions. The new SoC also integrates a dedicated low-power AI processor for audio processing.
With a suite of select Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, the Snapdragon 780G promises ultra-smooth gaming as well. It brings some desktop-level capabilities including updateable GPU drivers and True 10-bit HDR gaming.
The Snapdragon 780G 5G is also the first Snapdragon 700 series SoC with a triple Image Signal Processor (ISP), the Qualcomm Spectra 570. This enables the chipset to capture from three cameras simultaneously, such as zoom, wide, and ultra-wide lenses.
Qualcomm promises dramatic improvements to color, contrast, and detail in photos with the new 4K HDR with computational HDR capture. The new chipset also boasts new low-light architecture, allowing for clearer pictures even in dimly-lit environments.
"Since introducing the Snapdragon 7-series three years ago, more than 350 devices have launched based on 7-series mobile platforms. Today, we are continuing this momentum by introducing the Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform," said Kedar Kondap, a vice president at Qualcomm. "Snapdragon 780G was designed to bring in-demand, premium experiences to more users around the world."
Qualcomm says the first batch of devices based on the Snapdragon 780G 5G will hit the market in the second quarter of 2021.
