Samsung may be developing a foldable tablet, to go along with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This is indicated by a new design patent that surfaced online.
This design patent appeared on both USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). It initially surfaced on USPTO on February 16, and was spotted only recently.
Samsung submitted 18-page documentation for this design, in which it describes a modern Samsung Galaxy tablet with a flexible display. This is essentially a larger version of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.
There are some differences, of course. The hinge, first and foremost, had to be considerably different due to the size of this thing. The hinge is thicker, and thus the whole tablet is thicker on that part compared to the rest of it.
That hinge also cuts into the device’s display, from both the top and the bottom. So, think of it as a notch of sorts. The thing is, those two notches are not a huge problem considering the size of the display.
This tablet has only one display, the one on the inside. When it’s folded, you have no way of accessing information, as the cover display is not a part of the design.
What’s also interesting is… there’s not a single camera visible here. There isn’t one on the back, or the front of the device. Is it possible Samsung is considering releasing a tablet without a camera?
Well, a camera could be included under the display, for video call purposes, and selfies as well. Many would argue that a rear-facing camera is completely unnecessary on tablets, though.
You will notice a Type-C USB port at the bottom of this tablet, while speakers are also included. The same goes for physical buttons which are visible on the device.
Now, the display size hasn’t been mentioned here, of course. Considering that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 unfolds into a 7.6-inch tablet, this thing is probably considerably larger. We’d guess Samsung envisioned a 10-12-inch display for this device.
This is just a design patent, so it doesn’t guarantee this product will make it to market. Samsung tends to submit quite a few of these a year. Still, releasing a foldable tablet is quite possible, especially for Samsung.
