Samsung has just filed for a trademark for the moniker ‘S-Foldable’. The trademark description reads “display panels; display for smartphones; LCD large-screen displays; flexible flat panel displays for computers,” suggesting that it is a new type of foldable display panel. This is further supported by the fact that the trademark application was filed by Samsung Display, the Korean firm’s display manufacturing division. We may see the so-called ‘S-Foldable’ display in the next generation of foldable smartphones from Samsung.
Discovered by LetsGoDigital, Samsung Display filed for this trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) on 28th April 2021.
Samsung has a huge head start over its rivals in the field of foldable smartphones. The company already offers two foldable smartphone lineups – Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold. It is now preparing to launch new models under the two series, further expanding its lead in the market. However, that’s not it.
The Korean firm is also exploring the possibilities of making a phone that can be folded twice. It has already registered multiple patents for such a smartphone form factor. The recent trademark application suggests that the company is edging closer to making this a reality.
The ‘S’ in the ‘S-Foldable’ name could refer to the dual folding design. Of course, this is just speculation as of now. But it should be only a matter of time before we will see Samsung taking the stage with a new Galaxy Z series smartphone that can be folded twice.
There are speculations that the Korean firm would call this device Galaxy Z Fold Tab. And that totally makes sense. A dual folding mechanism means this would be huge when unfolded, probably as big as the company’s high-end Galaxy S series tablets, if not bigger.
Recent reports suggest Samsung could be ready with the so-called Galaxy Z Fold Tab by the end of this year, or at least in the first quarter of 2022. However, it’s still too early, so we can’t be sure of that just yet. We will have to wait for more reports to confirm that.
In the meantime, Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in the coming months. These devices may also feature newer and stronger frames, along with plenty of other improvements. It now remains to be seen if anyone catches Samsung in the race of foldable smartphones.
