TCL has just announced its latest concept phone, alongside the new 20 Series smartphones. And it’s a pretty interesting one.

This is the TCL Fold ‘n Roll. And just as the name indicates, this is a concept phone that folds, but is also rollable. Surprisingly, TCL opted to keep the screen on the outside, instead of putting it on the inside of the phone, like the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

TCL had previously shown off some concept foldable phones at CES 2020, and then a rollable phone more recently. Now those concepts have morphed into this one phone. As exciting as this looks, don’t expect it to be available to buy. As TCL is one of those companies that doesn’t release its concepts, like Xiaomi does.

The Fold ‘n Roll includes all the tech we’ve seen in previous TCL concepts

Not too surprising, but all of the tech that we saw in previous concepts from TCL, are available in the Fold ‘n Roll concept here. Including the Dragon Hinge, which was part of its first concept a few years ago.

When you unfold the phone, it turns into a “phablet” a term that was pretty popular a few years ago, but has mostly become distinct in 2021. It saves the “tablet” term for when it is also unrolled. Into a 10-inch tablet sized device.

While this might seem odd for a foldable device, it actually makes a lot of sense. Currently, foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the Huawei Mate XS fold out to reveal a larger display, but the aspect ratio is really odd. As it’s similar to a square, which is not all that usable. By having the phone fold out and then unroll, you can get a more usable aspect ratio. Though TCL hasn’t given us dimensions on that just yet.

TCL says that it plans to release its first commercial device with flexible display tech later this year. But that does not mean that it’ll be the Fold ‘n Roll.
