With LG’s mobile division dead and gone, we are starting to see which phone makers could potentially pick up the slack in the mid-range and budget division. Samsung has already announced a slew of new devices that are priced just right for many, and now TCL is throwing its hat in the ring. Today, TCL announced a few new devices, including the TCL 20L, 20L+, and TCL 20 Pro 5G.

Taking one look at the spec sheets for the TCL 20L and 20L+ and you’ll quickly notice that these are practically the same phone with some minor differences. Both devices sport a 6.67-inch FHD+ display with a hole-punch cutout at the top for the 16MP selfie camera. Under the hood, you’ll find the Snapdragon 662 providing the power, combined with either 4 or 6GB of RAM on the 20L, and only a 6GB option on the Plus variant. Storage is the same across the board with 128GB available, along with a microSD card slot if you find yourself bumping up against that limit.

Battery life is also the same for both thanks to the included 5,000mAh cell, but you won’t find any super fast charging or even wireless charging onboard. The 5,000mAh cell paired with the FHD+ display should provide more than enough juice to last you through the day. We also have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a dedicated hardware button to activate Google Assistant from anywhere.

As for the rear cameras, you’ll find a quad-camera array on the back, headlined by the 64MP main sensor on the 20L+ and a 48MP lens on the 20L. The other cameras included are an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor, providing plenty of versatility for anything that you want to capture. With the 20L+, TCL also states that the camera has been finetuned to provide “optimal clarity and color reproduction”.

These devices are slated to launch in select markets starting tomorrow, with the TCL 20L priced at €229, and the 20L+ starting at €269. The company did state that these devices would be arriving in more regions “in the coming weeks”, while also coming to North America “soon”.

TCL 20 Pro 5G

Moving onto the “flagship” of the group, TCL also introduced the new TCL 20 Pro 5G. This is a sibling of the TCL 20 that launched at CES 2021 earlier this year, albeit, a more powerful option in the lineup. We have the same 6.67-inch AMOLED display panel, which is powered by TCL’s NXTVISION 2.0 Display Technology. This tech has been around since last year’s TCL 10 series, and provides enhancements to color accuracy, along with automatic color, contrast, and sharpness adjustments. Plus, with NXTVISION 2.0 onboard, the TCL 20 Pro 5G also supports HDR10 so you can enjoy your favorite Netflix shows in the best quality possible.

With this upgraded model, you’ll find the Snapdragon 750G chipset paired with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage with the option to add a microSD card if you want. Thanks to the 750G, this provides the 5G connectivity that many folks are going to be looking for in future devices, even if you don’t have a solid 5G signal in your area. Keeping this beast chugging along through the day is a respectable 4,500mAh battery, along with 18W Quick Charge 3.0 and up to 15W charging speeds if you want to charge wirelessly.

As for the cameras, the quad-camera array is headlined by a 48MP Sony IMX lens with an f/1.79 aperture. Accompanying that Sony lens is a 16MP ultra-wide lens, 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The selfie camera features a 32MP sensor which includes a “Backlight Selfie” mode which gets rid of those potential washed out photos of you and your friends if you’re in the shade or if the sun is behind you.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G launches tomorrow in the UK, Italy, and Portugal, while being available in either Marine Blue or Moondust Gray. The device retails for €549, and will be coming to more markets over the next few weeks.
