LG has been in the headlines over the past few weeks for all the wrong reasons. The company announced its exit from the smartphone space, but that has opened the door for more questions, primarily focused by those who still own and use various LG devices. The biggest question has been what will happen to these devices after the company’s self-imposed departure from the market.
Saying goodbye to LG smartphones and their spirit of innovation
After making its original announcement, LG followed things up by stating its promise of continuing to provide up to three years of Android updates for select devices. That answer was still too vague, as it appeared that it was only for owners of the LG G and LG V-series of devices, which fall under the flagship category. Since LG offered quite a few devices at varying price points, what does this mean for them? We now have some better clarity courtesy of LG Germany, who published its Android 11 roadmap. Here are the devices that you can expect to see updated to Android 11:
Rollout | Status | |
---|---|---|
LG Velvet 5G | April 2021 | Rolling out now |
LG G8X | Q3 2021 | Testing |
LG Velvet 4G | Q4 2021 | Testing |
LG G8S | Q4 2021 | Testing |
LG Wing | Q4 2021 | Testing |
LG K52 | Q4 2021 | Testing |
LG K42 | Q4 2021 | Testing |
LG didn’t stop there, however, as the company’s Korean website shared some more devices that would see the update to Android 11. The problem here is that we don’t have a specific timeline, nor do we know if this means that all LG owners will see the update, or if it’s limited to device owners in specific countries. These devices include the V50, V50S, Q31, Q51, Q52, Q61, Q70, Q92, and Q9 One.
As for those “three years of promised OS updates”, LG Korea revealed a list of which devices would be updated to Android 12 and Android 13, along with others that won’t see the update past Android 12.
Android 12 | Android 13 | |
---|---|---|
LG Wing | Yes | Yes |
LG Velvet | Yes | Yes |
LG Velvet 4G | Yes | Yes |
LG V50s | Yes | No |
LG V50 | Yes | No |
LG G8 | Yes | No |
LG Q31 | Yes | No |
LG Q52 | Yes | No |
LG Q92 | Yes | No |
Again, it’s important to take this list with a grain of salt if you’re here in the U.S. or other markets outside of Korea. The company has yet to confirm whether the update will come to global devices or are only going to be arriving in specific regions. For all of its faults when it came to software, we’re really keeping our fingers crossed that LG follows through for its remaining customers.
