A leak has popped up showing what the Pixel smartwatch looks like. At least, what the smartwatch is supposed to look like. The leak is of course a rumor, and the images aren’t confirmed by Google to be official.
That being said, this is the first time that a design has surfaced claiming to be what the finalized look is for Google’s in-house wearable based on the Pixel franchise. The leak, which comes from a YouTube channel called Front Page Tech, showcases renders of the Pixel smartwatch.
It’s made very clear in the video that these renders are not actual images of the device. But rather based on the images that were received. You can see all the images and the video below. It’s also reportedly going to arrive in October.
Even though the images here are just renders that were recreations of the original images (because the source asked that the actual images not be shared), they still give an idea of what the actual design is like.
And as you can see the watch seems to be available in multiple colors. Google may not release the watch in this many variants. Since these may not be production-ready designs, there’s room for Google to change things. But if the designs are final then Google could end up offering the watch with multiple strap and case colors including white, blue, orange, black and more.
The leak also points out that the branding was shown off. Noting that the official name of the watch will be the Pixel Watch. None of the branding is shown in the recreated renders though. Likely because it was requested to be left out. The design of the Pixel Watch is said to be described as a round, bezel-free design that “brings unity to software and hardware.”
One of the biggest issues with Google’s smartwatch ecosystem is Wear OS. The software is sluggish and is notorious for having poor battery life.
According to the leak Wear OS is getting an overhaul. With changes to the design from, by the looks of it, top to bottom. Based on the recreated renders everything has a much more clean and minimal look. There’s lots of use of black with very little color.
Which could be just a small percentage of the available looks. But it wouldn’t be surprising if this was a conscious decision made by Google to better battery life. As less color could definitely help.
Everything also seems to be “glanceable.” Based on the marketing materials, Google is said to have referenced the phrase “at a glance” in regards to all the things the watch can provide. Such as “your world,” “your route,” “your agenda,” and more.
This suggests Google really wants to make the heart of this version of Wear OS a less involved, glanceable smartwatch operating system that lives on your wrist. As opposed to something you interact with a ton.
There’s a lot that’s still unknown here. But it appears the Pixel Watch is still coming.
