Many of you are probably looking forward to the weather improving, so that you can do more things outdoors. That is especially true due to the pandemic, and the fact that we were cooped up in our homes for a long time. Hiking may be a great way for you to get outside, and still stay away from people at the same time. Well, if hiking is an activity you’re willing to do, we do have some Android apps to recommend you, some of the best ones, at least in our opinion.
These apps can not only help you find the best hiking trails, but can also help you navigate, and so on. There are a lot of apps in the Play Store that can be considered hiking-related, of course. We’ve only highlighted our favorites. Some of them are similar to each other, but for the most part, this list is quite diverse. Do note that these applications are not listed in any specific order, though. You’ll find quite a bit of information about each one of them below, along with pricing info, required Android version, and so on.

The first app we’ll talk about is Runkeeper. This is a well-known fitness app, made primarily for runners. Still, this app can do a great job at tracking your hikes as well. It can track jogs, runs, walks, hikes, and even biking, if you want. The UI of the app is great, and that is one of the main reasons we’ve listed it here, along with its functionality, of course. You can make a specific plan inside the app, and then follow it.
If you have a hiking goal that you’d like to set, you can do that. The app can provide you with audio cues related to your pace, distance, and time. If you join Runkeeper Go, which is a part of the premium subscription, you’ll be able to find some weekly workout schedules to try out. Some of them may even be hiking-related. Hiking is not only a great way of being out in the fresh air, but you can make a great workout out of the experience, if you want.

Nobody really wants to go out hiking, and then get caught in a rainstorm, or something like that, right? Well, if you’d like to avoid that, you’ll need a good weather app on your phone. Weawow is a great choice for a weather app in general. This is one of the best-rated weather apps in the Play Store for a reason, maybe even the best-rated one. The app not only has a great UI, and offers stellar performance, but it also shares a ton of weather-related information.
This app does not come with ads, and it’s free to use. In-app purchases are included, but you’re not forced to buy anything. The app brings GPS support, 10 types of widgets, real-time weather updates, and supports over 50 languages. You can get accurate temperature information, apparent temperature, probability of rain, humidity, and so much more. Tons of details are shared by the app.

The Offline Survival Manual app is always good to have on you, especially if you’re going out in the wild. You never know when this app may come in useful. This app basically delivers a ton of survival tips via your phone, and you don’t even need an Internet connection in order to use it, as its name says. The app will show you how to make a fire, build a shelter find food, heal some wounds, and so on.
It’s hard to explain how many useful tips are included in this app. Everything the app shares is sorted into categories, so that you can easily find what you need. If you ever get stuck in the wild, you’ll appreciate having this app on you. The same thing goes if an accident happens, or something like that. This app is completely free, and it’s open source, by the way, so you don’t even have to put up with ads.

Knots 3D is the best-looking learn-to-tie-a-knot app we’ve seen thus far. This application delivers a ton of knowledge when it comes to tying knots, and you never know when it may become useful. The best of all, everything is not only explained, but shown via imagery, so you really cannot mess up. There are over 150 knots available in this application, and everything is sorted into categories.
There are boating, camping, climbing, decorative, fire & rescue, fishing knots, and various others. In each of those categories, you’ll find dozens of knots, pretty much. Do note that this application is not free, though. You’ll have to pay for it, it’s a one-time payment, though, and once you get it over with, you won’t have to put up with ads. Some of you probably need an app like this, and if you do, this is the way to go.

Komoot is a planning app, it’s essentially a route planning app. No matter if you’re going hiking, running, or biking, this app can be quite useful. You can plan your hike in detail thanks to this app. Komoot actually has a great community of people who share their knowledge and recommendations. Such information can make your hiking adventures much safer and much more enjoyable.
The app does offer turn-by-turn navigation, so that your eyes are always looking ahead, as they should on such trips. You can even download your planned adventure, well, kind of, you can download a path for it, as Komoot offers downloadable maps. It will download your route, so that you don’t have to use an Internet connection. This is also a great app to get some inspiration, as people share their favorite hiking spots / trails.

WikiCamps USA is another great app to have on your if you’re going hiking. Why? Well, this app contains a huge list of campgrounds and RV parks. It’s always a good idea to have a camp nearby your camping trail, needless to say. This particular app delivers a campground and RV park list for the US, but there are several iterations of the app, so you can download a different one if you’re not from the US.
There are over 24,000 site listings inside of this app. You can find campgrounds, RV parks, backpacker hostels, day stops, POI’s, dump points, information centers, and water points in this application. Do note that the app is not free, though. You can try it for free for 14 days, but past that point, you’ll be asked to pay up. Once you do, you can use the app as much as you want.

When you’re out in the wild, it’s important to have a compass with you. If you don’t have a physical one, using an app is not a bad idea, as long as it’s good. Just a Compass is a great app for that purpose. The best of all, this app is free to use, and it doesn’t come with ads. It can provide you with magnetic and geographic north using magnetic declination. On top of that, sunrise and sunset times are highlighted.
There are various skins and color themes available in the app, including the high-contrast ones. The app can provide you with true altitude above sea level info for your current position. It can provide you with latitude & longitude in MGRS, UTM, DD, DMM or DMS formats. The app’s design is simple, and yet it’s really easy to use because of it. If you’re in need of a compass app, Just a Compass is worth trying out.

If you’re going hiking often and consider that one of your main hobbies, this is a great app to have. BackCountry Navigator brings forth a rich selection of offline topographical maps. It gets the information for such maps from USGS color aerial photography, OpenStreetMaps, NASA landsat data, and more than that. In addition to the U.S., this app contains information for Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, and more countries.
Now, the app itself is immensely useful if you’re into hiking, but do note it’s not free. This is a paid app, and it costs $14.99. The thing is, it also comes with content inside that requires additional payments, as highlighted at the beginning of this article. Many people won’t really need this, especially if you’re going on light hikes occasionally. Those of you who do need it, well, you’ll have to pay for it.

In order not to forget anything for your trip, you may want to keep a hiking checklist. You can do that in basically any note-taking / to-do app, but there’s a specific app for hiking, believe it or not. It’s called TrekPack, and it’s actually quite good. If you like to keep things separate, this is a great way to go about it. TrekPack will contain only your information for trekking / hiking, that’s it.
This app looks really nice, its UI is simple, and yet highly functional. The app comes with various categories, including clothing, cooking, food/water/fuel, hygiene, and so on. It includes a checklist generator feature as well. The app can automatically generate a list of essential gear for your next hiking trip based on the climate of destination, and other properties of your trip.
