Verizon has just revealed that it will be shutting down its 3G network by the end of 2022. This was announced just today, and it seems that Verizon is serious about it this time.

Verizon will pull the plug on December 31st, 2022

According to Droidlife, Verizon has finally settled on a date for the end of its 3G networks. December 31st, 2022 will be the cut-off date. This gives customers plenty of time to switch over from their current 3G enabled devices. Verizon is certain to give its customers ample warning before they shut down.

Verizon has pushed the date back several times- once earlier this year. It had even planned to shut it down sometime in 2019. However, the carrier stated on its site that it will not extend the date any more times.

As it's dead set on shutting their service down on that date. Verizon stated that it will be shutting down their 3G network months after the competition, so AT&T and T-Mobile are expected to shut down their 3G networks sometime before the end of next year, and Verizon sees this as a plus.

A lot of people still use 3G phones

One of the main reasons why it's taking so long to finally bring the axe down on 3G networks is the fact that many people still use 3G networks around the world. Just last year, it was estimated that 46% of mobile phone users around the world still relied on 2G/3G signals.

If companies shut down their 3G networks, that's a lot of people who will be without phone service. Many of the people who use the 3G networks are most likely in less robust smartphone markets that are dominated by "dumbphones." This means that carriers will need to offer their 3G customers some sort of incentive to switch over to either 4G or 5G enabled devices.

The death of 3G means that carriers will prioritize their 5G networks even more, which will hopefully lead to better coverage and speeds. It's been proven that ever since its conception, 5G has had a bit of a rocky start.

Spotty and inconsistent coverage were some of the issues that customers dealt with. The death of 3G will also lead to flip phone and "dumbphone" manufacturers being forced to build 4G/5G enabled phones. Chip manufacturers will see a rise in their sales of 4G and 5G modems also. The move from a 3G world will have more effects on the mobile market- but when it comes to technology and innovation, that's nothing new.
