Are you a YouTube lover who obsesses over the likes and dislikes of a video? Well, it looks like YouTube will hide dislike count on videos for some users according to Engadget. This could potentially affect a lot of people in a positive way. YouTube says this is a small experiment though that will start in the coming weeks.

As a result, this may not be a permanent change. However, if it does become permanent this can help to put an end to a couple of things. For one it can shut down trolls who may dislike a video just because they want to be jerks.

Now to clarify, the dislike button will still be there, and users can click or tap it. But, the total number of dislikes will not be shown. However, this is only for viewers. For creators, they can still see and view the total number of dislikes in YouTube Studio.

YouTube will hide dislike count as an experiment

This test comes as a result of the feedback from content creators on the “well-being and dislike campaigns.” However, people can still use the dislike button to share feedback and shape their curated recommendations.

YouTube has been mulling over what to do with the dislike button for a few years now. Since 2018 to be precise. That is the same year the annual Rewind feature became the most disliked video on YouTube. So it is no surprise that the following year YouTube thought about turning off rating counts by default.

The company even was considering removing the button altogether. This would have been done to keep people from carpet bombing a video with dislikes. Unfortunately, some people just like to troll and be toxic for no reason.

This new experiment could be a new direction that YouTube will go. The company has been thinking about what to do for some years, and it looks like YouTube may be making a decision. It is no secret that the number of likes and dislikes are important on any social media platform

Other social media platforms have done their tests on hiding likes. Instagram did the same in order to get users to focus on enjoying creating content. Instead of a lot of users creating content to specifically get likes.

Likes and dislikes can also lead to anxiety and sometimes depression for social media users. People can post an image or a video that they truly are passionate or happy about on these platforms. But, they may not receive the feedback they want. As a result, they get sad because it can feel like they are not as likable as others.
