ZTE made waves late in 2020 as the company introduced the world’s first smartphone featuring an under-display camera with the Axon 20 5G. Many reviews panned that decision due to the camera quality itself, despite being a unique introduction. This time around, ZTE is back again to try and make waves but by offering a bit more than just a potential gimmick. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra has been announced and offers another flagship contender for the year.

With the Axon 30 Ultra, we’ll be getting a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 144Hz and an FHD+ (2400 x 1080) resolution. As you might expect for a flagship, the Snapdragon 888 operates as the brains for the Ultra. ZTE is also offering three different configurations, including 8GB, 12GB or 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of onboard storage, which is more than we’ve seen from just about any other phone maker so far in 2021.

Moving to the cameras, ZTE is taking a different approach with its camera system compared to others. The biggest change is the introduction of a trio of 64MP sensors, all with varying apertures. The main lens has an f/1.6 aperture with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), the secondary camera is equipped with an f/1.9 aperture and is slightly zoomed in, while the final lens is an ultra-wide with an f/2.2 aperture. But the fun doesn’t stop there as there’s an additional 8MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x Optical Zoom, 10x Hybrid Zoom, and OIS onboard. Selfies will be just fine thanks to the 16MP camera on the front, as ZTE opted to go back to a normal hole-punch design.

Battery life should be a beast with the combination of ZTE’s 4,600mAh battery with the FHD+ resolution of the display. But when it’s time to get some power, The Axon 30 Ultra includes support for up to 66W fast charging along with Quick Charge 4+ support. And yes, before you ask, ZTE is including a 66W charger in the box, so you won’t have to go searching for one later.

Other features of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra includes an under-display fingerprint scanner, dual Nano SIM slots, dual speakers, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, all while running ZTE’s MyOS11 which is based on Android 11. In China, the Axon 30 Ultra launches on April 19th and is priced at CNY 4,698 (~$720) for the 8GB/256GB version and CNY 4,998 (~$767) for the 12GB/256GB variant. Unfortunately, ZTE stopped short of sharing how much the global version of the Axon 30 Ultra will cost, only stating that this device will be coming in May.
