It has been reported that ZTE’s second-gen under-display camera tech has been unveiled. ZTE took the smartphone market by storm when it unveiled its first under-display camera tech.
A lot of other manufacturers are still perfecting their technology to put in commercially available devices. ZTE got an early head start on the competition, but its first attempt is not perfect.
The first attempt from ZTE leaves a lot to be desired. The presentation isn’t exactly perfect, and the picture quality is lacking. Recently, the ZTE Axon 20 received the second to last lowest selfie camera score from DXOMark.
Thankfully, the second-gen tech is on its way and ZTE promises some much-needed improvements. On Weibo (via Android Authority) ZTE has given some details about the upcoming second-gen under-display camera tech.
Firstly, ZTE says they have increased the pixel density of the display that covers the camera. ZTE has doubled the pixel density from 200ppi to 400ppi. The original ZTE Axon 20 actually only has 338ppi, so this is a big step up.
Due to this increase in pixel density, ZTE claims the display should be “more consistent”. Secondly, ZTE says that it is also increasing the screen refresh rate from 90Hz to 120Hz. Funnily enough, the increase may signal what the next Axon smartphone offers.
These improvements are welcome. But, there is no word if the camera quality has been improved. The first-gen implementation suffered from blurry sub-par images as a result of lower quality.
Thankfully, ZTE is actually putting some care into their under-display technology. A lot of times a company will create new technology, and abandon it if it doesn’t catch on. Remember sliding smartphones that were around a couple of years ago?
As ZTE continues to improve its under-display camera tech the problems that were prevalent in the first-gen will be solved. This will allow for a more enjoyable experience for users and will move us towards a future where smartphones are all screen on the front.
